To keep your motorcycle clothing in good condition for as long as possible, it is important to clean it carefully and regularly. Of course, you often don't have the time or inclination to clean it meticulously down to the last detail after every ride.
In this guide, I'll tell you how I carefully clean my leather suit, what you should clean immediately and which accessories require less care.
My 30-minute routine:
1) Helmet: 5 minutes
2) Estate (leather): 15 minutes
3) Shoes: 5 min
4) Gloves: 5 min
The general rule is: read the label!
Each item of clothing has a label with instructions describing whether it is machine washable or can only be cleaned by hand. Be sure to follow these instructions if you want to get the most out of your accessories for a long time.
cleaning the helmet
For quick care after the ride, I put a wet kitchen roll on the helmet and visor and let it work. I always use high-quality kitchen roll, as the cheap one quickly disintegrates and leaves residue on the helmet. After five minutes, it can be removed again.
For heavier soiling:
- Place wet kitchen roll with washing-up liquid or window cleaner on the helmet and visor. This will also remove stubborn flies and other stains.
- Let the padding and helmet air out once a week.
- If necessary, spray the helmet and padding with helmet padding cleaner . Follow the care instructions on the packaging.
- Wash the upholstery in the washing machine once a month (follow the care label)
Caring for Leather Suits
Without proper care, moisture will penetrate the leather suit and cause it to crack and break over time. A well-maintained suit increases my driving safety and comfort. Reason enough for regular care!
If I need to do it quickly, I also clean my suit with wet kitchen roll. The same applies here: if it is very dirty, use washing-up liquid.
There are also special cleaning products for cleaning leather suits, but I personally don't think that's necessary. There are also special cleaning products for leather suits, but I don't think that's absolutely necessary, as household remedies are usually sufficient.
Every six weeks I treat my combo with saddle fat – it is much cheaper and often of higher quality than special leather grease for station wagons.
Clean shoes and gloves
I just wipe my gloves and shoes with water and apply leather grease every 6 weeks.
